Pesky Flappers

Recently, the toilet in my apartment broke, and I found myself travelling to the hardware store in order to buy a replacement part. And, apparently, the particular part that needed replacing is called a flapper.
It looks like this:
This surprised me, since I always thought flappers looked like this:
They do not, in fact, function alike.
