Alone, Under a Streetlight

He was alone, beneath a streetlight that echoed a sphere of visibility in the otherwise nondescript black space. He could see his immediate surrounds, but no further, and he knew he was alone in the cool of the night.

She called a greeting to him. And though her words caused his heart to leap, he could yet not see her, since she was outside of the light provided. But nonetheless, he responded to her, and they carried a conversation of life and love.

They continued at length, speaking and laughing together as lovers may, enjoying the happiness afforded to them. Yet still, he could not see her. And even though she was right there with him, he felt utterly, utterly alone in the darkness.
